Etymology: quint- + -ile
1. obsolete : the aspect of planets when separated a fifth part of a circle or 72 degrees
2. : any of the four values that divide the items of a frequency distribution into five classes each containing one fifth of the total number of items such that the values corresponding to the items in one class are less than the first quintile, those in a second class are greater than the first quintile and less than the second quintile, and so on throughout
